Craft Day

I have been volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters for the past 8 months and have the sweetest, most adorable little sister. She is an aspiring 4th grade artist with high hopes of going to college for art and design. She has a beautiful smile and sweet demeanor. Its so wonderful spending time with her. Yesterday, we painted birdhouses and had so much fun doing it. I am so pleased with the results!

Birthday Cakes!

My poor computer has been super slow lately, so in hopes of speeding things up, I went through all of my photos and deleted many of them. Going through them brought back many wonderful memories and I found myself laughing out loud more than once. I thought it would be fun to post all of the birthday cakes I have pictures of that I have made for people, since it has become my specialty! (these pictures are in no particular order- I'm still figuring out the blogging format, etc)

Evan's 24th, March 2009
he's super into skating these days and I though the tie-dye was really fun!

Chelsea's 21st, February 2009
Because Chelsea likes flowers? I don't know, it was girlie and included yummy candy

Matt's 23rd, September 2008
Sorry for the sideways photo- Matt picked cello up really quickly and he's amazing- why not have a cello on his cake?

Emily's 21st, September 2008
Just a fun party cake! We had lots of bling party favors in honor of Emily's amazing jewelry designs!

Aaron's 21st, July 2008
What college guy doesn't love PBR? It seemed fitting for my BFF's 21st.

Chelsea's 20th, February 2008
Again, flowers are great, and I thought Chels deserved a pretty cake!

Arielle's 20th, December 2007
A peace sign made out of Reeses, what wouldn't Arielle love about this?

Ashley's 22nd, February 2008
For a cute girlie-girl!

Erin's 20th, December 2007
Anyone who knows Erin knows that she's more than obsessed with her cat, Daphne- it only seemed right to have a cake with Daph's paw prints.

David's 23rd, January 2008
Evan is mostly responsible for this one- I just helped a little. David loves vikings!

Ben (Mykul's) 21st, December 2007
Mykul loves bikes, so why not bake him a bike cake that looks just like his beloved bike?

Emily's 20th, September, 2007
Long before her birthday, Em told me that all she wanted was a "hot now" donut cake from Krispy Kreme- given that they don't exist, I did my best.

William's 17th, August 2007
William love's golf!

Jake and Aaron's 20th, July 2007
For some reason, these boys were determined to have a race car cake, Chelsea and I did just that!

Sarah (Patty's) 20th, November 2007
Because Patty love's music, especially piano.

A Surprise Party!

Yesterday was my friend Mike's birthday and his girlfriend planned an awesome surprise party. I helped in cake baking- or freezing. I attempted at making my first ice cream cake. It was yummy, because ice cream is exactly that, but I do have a lot of kinks to work out for the next one. The cake was decorated with a cowboys and indians theme- it was pretty amazing. The party festivities included balloon hats and animals, a pinata, and lots of amazing decorations. Mike had a great birthday and its always fun to hang out with friends!

Embroidery...

For my final three projects, I have decided to have embroidery be a huge aspect of each piece. Now that I am in the midst of juggling all three embroidery projects, I am quite "embroidered out"... but I keep telling myself only two more weeks until summer!

*pictures of the finished pieces will be posted!

Art History

As most know, art history class can be rather dull. On Monday and Wednesday mornings, I am in an art history class with my roommate, Emily, and as expected, Monday mornings tend to be the most painful. While I do listen and take notes, my notes are interspersed with doodles and silly notes between Emily and I. Yesterday, we were listening to a lecture on Art in Columbia. The Monday morning lecture went on as usual until we got to Fernando Botero. I have seen Botero's work before and haven't had much of an opinion other than it is a bit on the strange side, but- I had never seen his depiction of the Mona Lisa. As my professor flipped to the slide of the Mona Lisa I couldn't help but giggle to myself and nudge Emily who was in la-la land, doodling all over her paper. Once she saw it, she immediately started laughing and it was hopeless for the two of us. We were stuck in that horrible situation where you know you can't laugh, but that makes the situation that much more funny. My whole body was shaking with laughter and tears were streaming down my face. I had to excuse myself from class to collect myself in the bathroom- upon my returning to class Emily had to do the same.

Then, yesterday evening, looking for an excuse to do anything but embroider, I found several of Botero's most humorous works and hid them all throughout our apartment while Emily was at work. Then, last night when I returned home, I found them in many more discreet places, such as under my pillow.

No one else that we have showed these pictures to think they're nearly as funny as we do- I guess it was just a case of the Mondays. (We are most definitely not making fun on the art, we are just having fun with it!)

Love this dress!

I was taking a break from my art history paper and came across this adorable dress! This dress is made by Shabby Apple, a small company based in Utah who's mission is..
"A return to what dresses were always meant to be- a one-piece outfit. No need to add anything... no tank tops, no cardigans, nothing (except accessories, of course!)"
You can find more of their cute styles here!

Welcome Maggie!

The Shaw/Hanson family welcomed our newest addition this past Tuesday! Jen, Matthew's wife, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Margaret Anne (Maggie) early Tuesday morning. I went to visit everyone in the hospital on Tuesday and had the privilege of giving Maggie her first dress/girl outfit since Matt and Jen chose to keep gender a surprise! She's a beautiful, healthy baby that will be loved very much!

Ew Finals.

Finals are still a week and a half away but I feel like I have been in the midst of them for the past week and a half. In a way, its nice that they are spread out, but there's nothing worse than dragging them out for three and a half weeks! The beach the week after finals with my woodworking friends is the light at the end of the tunnel- I can't wait!

Since I've been so busy, I have been completely neglecting this blog. I haven't felt like anything interesting has happened to me the past several days, or weeks for that matter, but interesting things happen to everyone every hour. SO- I am going to do my very best to be better about this!

Last week, I went exploring through alleys to find chipping/peeling paint to photograph for one of my textiles project- I'm sure you're thinking photography and fabric don't go hand in hand, but I'm making them! Anyways, I took some really great pictures and I'm pretty proud of myself. I must give Grace a huge thanks for helping me get the hang of macro shots. But- I think I'm onto something here with my art and these photos!

Easter Weekend!

I apologize for going MIA for the past week or so- life has been rather crazy as I am approaching finals! I did have a wonderful Easter weekend with my family! We dyed Easter eggs, baked Easter treats and made dog bonnets for the Easter festival and bonnet contest on Monument Ave. It was a beautiful weekend and great to spend it with my family!
